Comments on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday, January 21, 2019

On behalf of Indiana University, I would like to encourage you to join our faculty, students and staff today and this month in celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The IU community's embrace of public service and activities planned on our campuses across the state is evidence of the enduring impact of his life and work.

Dr. King's global vision of justice helped to awaken the social conscience of our great country to its moral obligation and continues to inspire and impact all of IU's efforts to build a community in which diversity of community and ideas is valued and in which all members of the community are committed to the highest standards of ethical conduct and integrity.

Today as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day -- and as we approach IU's bicentennial celebration in 2020 -- we continue to reaffirm IU's deep and abiding commitment to diversity and to further developing the university as a diverse, engaged and multicultural academic community that will serve as a model for higher education, the state of Indiana and society at large.
