    Winter Commencement

    Some 1,888 IU Bloomington students will graduate during the Winter Commencement ceremony. The campus will award 1,945 degrees: 1,360 bachelor's degrees, 459 master's degrees, 115 doctoral research degrees, six doctoral practice degrees, four specialist degrees and one associate degree. (Some students receive more than one degree).

    Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan and one of the most highly respected leaders in American higher education, will address graduates at Indiana University Bloomington's winter commencement in Assembly Hall. Coleman will retire in July 2014 after 12 years as leader of the University of Michigan, widely regarded as the nation's premier "public ivy" university. She was president of the University of Iowa from 1995 to 2002. She will receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at the IU Bloomington ceremony.

    IU Athletics Receives Historic Gift

    IU President Michael A. McRobbie announced that IU Athletics has received a $40 million gift—the largest in its history—from IU alumna Cindy Simon Skjodt to provide much needed renovations to Assembly Hall and launch IU Athletics' ambitious and unprecedented $150 million "Catching Excellence: The Campaign for Indiana University Athletics" capital campaign.

    State of the University: Looking to the Future: Preparing for Indiana University’s Bicentenary

    Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie unveiled a comprehensive $15 million Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative aimed at preserving and making accessible in digital form the unique and invaluable collections of video, recorded music and other irreplaceable material assembled by the university over its nearly 200-year history as part of an overall digitization master plan.

    Delivering his annual State of the University address to an audience of faculty and staff gathered on the Bloomington campus, President McRobbie also announced the launch of a broad-based IU Strategic Plan for the Bicentenary, a campus-based process that will position the university to enter its third century with clear goals and strategies for achieving them. IU will celebrate its bicentenary during the 2019-20 academic year.

    IU Kokomo Dedicates its New Fitness Center

    Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie presided over the dedication ceremony for the new IU Kokomo Milt and Jean Cole Family Fitness and Wellness Center. The 21,000-square-foot fitness center was made possible through a $1.25 million gift from Milt and Jean Cole and their family. The gift is the largest cash gift ever received on IU’s Kokomo campus.

    IU Dedicates the U.S.S. Indiana Prow

    Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie dedicated the prow of the World War II battleship USS Indiana in a ceremony before the IU/Navy football game. The last ship to be named for the Hoosier state, the USS Indiana served in the Pacific during World War II. A collector of Navy memorabilia saved the prow—the front portion of the ship—from being scrapped, and the university acquired it earlier this year. It has been refurbished, and is now on display outside Memorial Stadium's west entrance alongside the ship's mainmast and two of its gun mounts that were gifted to the university by the Navy in 1966.

    In a remarkable show of support for IU Athletics' roughly 600 student-athletes and 19 head coaches, IU President Michael A. McRobbie recently completed his tour of attending games and/or practices for all of IU's 24 varsity sports programs in one academic year. He was a fixture at IU athletic events during the entire 2012-13 academic year and witnessed first-hand one of the finest years in Hoosier history.

    On May 16, 2013, IU President Michael A. McRobbie talked about his upcoming trip to South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. While visiting East Asia, President McRobbie will sign or renew agreements of academic cooperation between Indiana University and five of the leading universities in the region. IU continues to strengthen institutional ties, increase research opportunities, and provide great access to study abroad programs. Trips are essential to maintaining a presence and position among the most globally focused universities in the world.

The Peebles Lecture series sponsors one lecture per academic year in areas of information technology relevant to research, teaching, or creative activity in academe. The topic of the 2013 lecture was titled, “Scientific computing — will the lessons learned apply to the future?”
